Time Out Week begins April 7 on UND campus; Wacipi set for April 11

This year’s University of North Dakota Time Out week, with the theme, “Gender and Sexuality in Native America,” will be held April 7-13 in the UND Memorial Union.

Time Out Week is an annual gathering on campus that is sponsored by UND Indian Studies Association.

The week’s events will culminate, as usual, with a Wacipi in the old UND Hyslop Sports Center, just to the south and east of the Memorial Union. A Wacipi is a celebration featuring dancing and singing. Drum groups and dancers come from all parts of the continent to take part in this cultural celebration.

Time Out Week

Time Out week includes speakers, entertainment, workshops and activities that are free and open to the public.

The opening ceremony will be at 10 a.m., Monday, April 7, at UND Memorial Union, Fireside Lounge. Some events from each day include:

  • Monday, April 7: “Women’s Work: Gender Roles of Ojibwe Women,” a presentation by Jayde Serich (Fon du Lac Band of Chippewa), noon, UND Memorial Union, Lecture Bowl.
  • Tuesday, April 8: A concert by, “Tone Def Sirens” (Yankton Sioux Tribe), 7 p.m., UND Memorial Union, Loading Dock.
  • Wednesday, April 9: Native Youth Sexual Health Network “Two Spirit Workshop,” 4 p.m., UND Memorial Union, Ballroom.
  • Thursday, April 10: Song and hoop dance by, Jackie Bird (Mandan, Hidatsa, and Dakota), 1:30 p.m., UND Memorial Union, Ballroom.
  • Friday, April 11: Glenn & Gary Drapeau (Ihanktonwan Nakota), “Empowering Nations Through Dakota Traditions,” 10 a.m., UND Memorial Union, River Valley Room.

These events provide educational opportunities highlighting the cultural traditions, talents, and contributions that American Indians bring to the community and region.

Wacipi

On Friday, April 11, the grand entry for UNDIA Wacipi dance competition begins at 7 p.m. in the Hyslop Sport Center. Grand entries will also take place on April 12 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and on April 13 at 1 p.m. The categories are:

  • Adult men’s and women’s Golden Age 55+
  • Senior adults men and women ages 35-54
  • Junior adults men and women ages 18-34
  • Teen boys and girls ages 13-17
  • Junior boys and girls ages 6-12
  • Tiny tots ages 0-5
  • Singing contest: First-fourth place

Registration begins Friday, April 11 at 4 p.m. and closes April 12 at 1 p.m. Admission is free to UND students with ID and those over 60 and under 5 years old. The cost to all others is $12 for the weekend or $7 per day. A traditional meal on April 12 at 5 p.m. is free to the public.

Time Out  Wacipi sponsors include the UND Office of the President, City of Grand Forks, UND Student Government, Student Organization Funding Agency (SOFA), American Indian Student Services, Department of American Indian Studies and the Cultural Awareness Committee.
